Sciatica, and Leg Pain

What is Sciatica?
Sciatica isn’t a condition of its own but it is instead a symptom of an underlying medical issue, which has caused by an injury or compression (pinching) of the sciatic nerve. Symptoms associated with sciatica include pain, weakness, tingling, or numbness in the leg. Sometimes this is mistaken for an injury to the hamstring, or muscular injury to the leg, but the problem can originate in the back. It is also known as sciatic nerve dysfunction.
Sciatica can be caused by pressure or damage to the sciatic nerve, which is housed in the spine, and goes down the the back of each leg. It is responsible for providing sensory function and controlling the muscles that mobilize the knees, and lower legs, and also provides sensory information to the back of the thigh, parts of the lower leg and feet.It can be caused by muscular disorders, a tumor in the spine, injury to the pelvis, spinal stenosis, a bulging or slipped disc, or degenerative disc disease.

The pain associated with sciatica occurs mostly on one leg, sometimes the pain is sharp and accompanied by numbness in other parts of the legs. The pain and discomfort can also be felt behind the calf muscles, or may run as far as the sole of the foot, causing the leg to feel weak. Sciatic pain can start slowly but often builds up when there is a sudden or jerking movement, like coughing or sneezing,  after prolonged periods of sitting or standing, and walking, and may even increase at night.
